The importance of talking
Often people just want to talk in order that they can determine for themselves the solutions that they need. Here at DAAP we offer Talk Therapy to anyone who has an addiction or a related problem and to anyone who is concerned about someone’s else’s problem or issues. We never turn anyone away. If we can help, we will.
Many communities share an implicit culture of ‘not exposing’ problems to outside bodies. For many people talking to anyone outside the immediate or extended family is seen as a failure on their part to solve their problems. This often means that many individuals continue to suffer in silence and their problems do not get solved.
Let us acknowledge that there is no shame in seeking help. The stigma that says that ‘this cannot happen to us’ must be stemmed.
Talk Therapy is about providing support to a person by enabling them to express their emotions, problems and solutions in a safe and non-judgemental environment. This empowers the individual to access appropriate help and support.
Obviously we operate within the national models of care and ensure confidentiality for our service users.
We will only breach cconfidentiality if there is concern that a user of the service is putting a third party/individual at risk (especially when that individual is a child); when DAAP is instructed by the courts, or in certain limited circumstances by the police acting on the authority of the courts, to reveal information; the service user falls seriously ill; if the service user gives information about a serious crime which has been committed or if the service user has threatened, or seems likely, to do serious harm to him or herself.
